2018 Michigan Horseshoer’s Association
Annual Contest and Clinic Results
by Katie Panos
This year’s MHA contest and clinic ran smoothly with great information from the judge, Chris Madrid, CJF, and the speaker Adam Pendleton, CJF, DVM. There were 14 open competitors, 8 intermediate competitors, and 8 novice competitors from MI, OH, KY, OK, FL, IN, MN, NM, TX, CO, WI, NC, AR, VA, AZ, AL, ONT, and QUE, that’s 16 states and 2 Canadian provinces. It was also the conclusion of the triple crown derby which has grown in size again this year.
Thursday were the shoe making classes. Novice competitors worked on quarter clips and a fullered toe in a keg size 0 shoe, made a pair of plain stamped hinds with fullering through the toe, and a plain stamped bar shoe with a toe clip. Intermediate competitors had to make a full set of plain stamped shoes with fronts having toe clips and hinds being quarter clipped, a pair of front fuller straight bar shoes, and lastly a hind roadster shoe with a hammer drawn toe clip, a pony roadster with a toe clip, and a sidebone shoe hammer finished. Open competitors worked on a full set of fullered shoes, fronts were toe clipped, hinds were quarter clipped, the set was hammer finished, in class 2 they made a fullered front toe clipped, a hind roadster with a hammer drawn toe clip, and they finished the day with shoes from the convention list that included the fullered and heel caulked mule shoe, the aluminum toe extension, and the sliding plate. At the end of the day Chris made a fuller to demo tool making skills.
Live shoeing occurred on Friday. Novice competitors drew quarter clips on hind keg shoes and made a specimen shoe that paired the shod foot. Intermediate competitors shod a front foot in a plain stamped shoe with a toe clip and made a fullered front shoe with side clips as a specimen shoe. Open competitors shod a foot in a fullered and toe clipped shoe and made a roadster for a specimen. This was followed by the two man draft shoe class in which competitors made a full set of draft shoes fullered with scotch heels, toe clipped in front and quarter clipped hinds. They followed AFA rules for this class. At the conclusion of the two man, a pizza party commenced while competitors forged a piece of square stock to fit in a 3/8” round hole with the fastest time. The winner won the whole money pool on Saturday.
The last day of the contest Adam Pendleton gave a great talk about dealing with hoof wall distortions and having patience with major pathologic distortions as the foot heals in the morning. He stressed that twisting forces that the fetlock can under go have a large effect on how you should maintain the foot. In pathologic cases like white line disease and laminitis, he offered that we should not be resecting hoof wall, but maintaining it until healthy wall has exceeded the heel buttress. In between these two talks, Chris Madrid gave an informative demonstration on how to make your own tongs. He gave patient step by step instructions that were easy to follow, and made the key steps clear. He also demonstrated how to properly adjust existing tongs. The day continued after lunch with the three man draft class in which teams had to shoe a front and a hind foot in fullered shoes with toe clips. Each team member was responsible for one specimen shoe each which included tool and fullered caulk and wedge hind shoe, fully fullered front deep seated bar shoe toe clipped, and a front plain stamped shoe, toe clipped.
The conclusion of the contest was the banquet and auction. Gene Harris started it off with grace before food. Jennifer Horn thanked the people that made the contest run smoothly with particular attention to Henry Detweiler, CJF, who has supported the MHA not only in the contest but in all the events throughout the year and presented him with a drawing of himself shoeing done by Jim Keith. The awards were handed out for the contest, creative forging, and the triple crown. Lastly, Hank Detweiler auctioned off donated items, and creative forging entries. He had help from Craig and Bodie Trnka who showed off the items in style. The MHA would like to again thank all the competitors for coming to the contest, it was a great 49th.
